A recent survey targeting social media users in Dhaka sheds light on how individuals engage with these platforms and the benefits, concerns, and trends around their usage. This study, conducted among 100 residents aged mainly between 20 and 30 years, reveals that social media has become essential across demographics for personal, educational, and professional purposes.
The survey indicates that Facebook leads with 99% usage among respondents, followed by YouTube at 93%. While Instagram, LinkedIn, Twitter, and TikTok are also popular, their user rates are relatively lower. Notably, 70% of respondents primarily use social media after dinner, from 9 PM to midnight, showing a strong preference for nighttime engagement.
The study found that most users (94%) turn to social media for entertainment, while 77% use it to stay informed about current affairs. However, challenges like misinformation (83%) and negative impacts on youth (70%) were noted as significant concerns. Despite these issues, almost all respondents believe that social media has improved communication and information access, with 98% acknowledging easier connectivity and 92% appreciating the quick sharing of information.
Interestingly, the survey reflects shifting media habits, with nearly all participants agreeing that social media is impacting the popularity of local TV. Additionally, 19% reported that they had experienced social media account hacking, indicating a need for better security measures.
This survey underscores social media's role as a crucial tool for Dhaka's residents, helping users connect, access information, and even pursue business ventures, while also highlighting the challenges and safety concerns accompanying its growth.
